What we do

Work Programme 2025 - 2030

The Mission

The Common Space (TCS) is transforming the Isle of Wight-a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve-into a world-leading hub for regenerative living. Amid deepening social, economic, and environmental challenges, we offer a bold, place-based solution: a replicable model of sustainable development grounded in community-driven environmental governance.

Why the Isle of Wight?

This island is both a microcosm of global challenges and a unique testbed for innovation. Its scale (900 km²), rich biodiversity, and strong civic culture make it the ideal “living lab” for piloting systems change-from climate action and nature recovery to democratic renewal and inclusive prosperity.

Our Goals by 2030

  • £20 million+ in sustainability investments mobilised

  • 30% of the land under active nature recovery

  • Federation of 33 parishes for empowered, unlimited local governance

  • UNESCO-accredited Centre of Excellence in ecological design and cultural enterprise

  • Global CoCreate Network launched for exporting innovation worldwide

Six Transformational Workstreams

  1. Beacon: Building an investable island model through green new deal, community wealth building, care coalition and high-impact finance.

  2. Biosphere: Embedding transformational governance across local and regional systems using open data, decentralised autonomous networks, and community leadership.

  3. Nature Recovery: Accelerating place-based programmes to deliver international 30x30 biodiversity targets, rebuild ecosystem function and reassemble societies of people and communities of wildlife.

  4. Artecology: Scaling nature-informed ecological design innovation via CoCreate partnerships as a UK plc industrial strength, in the regions, nationally and across the overseas territories and dependencies.

  5. Parish Futures: Reigniting grassroots democracy through “Unlimited Parishes” delivering local solutions for active citizenship, community health, the right to housing, and lifelong learning.

  6. Better Island Project: Turning systemic data into stories of possibility, action narratives, global conversations and a new language of social ecological solidarity.

Join Us

The Isle of Wight can be your laboratory, lighthouse, and legacy. Help us turn systemic crisis into global opportunity.

Let’s Talk…

  • “A Living Lab for Policy in Action”
The Isle of Wight stands at the frontline of demographic, ecological, and economic challenge, and for that reason is also a frontier of innovation and renewal opportunity. As a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, it offers a unique, risk-contained platform to trial next-generation policy on climate, education, social care, ecological design and effective local governance. With federated parish democracy and shovel-ready community programmes, policy allies can test scalable, whole-place solutions with global relevance. Partner with us to prototype tomorrow’s democracy today.

  • “A Coalition of Care, Powered by People and Planet”
We are building a new model of community-led environmental governance-where democracy, ecology, and social wellbeing intersect. From health justice to biodiversity restoration, our six interlinked workstreams open space for collaboration across mutual aid, climate action, education, and youth empowerment. NGOs are invited to co-design and scale local solutions with global resonance-from parish networks to multispecies place-making.

  • “Invest in a New Economic Story”
Join the transformation of the Isle of Wight into a regenerative enterprise accelerator. With our Biosphere-led investment zones, and community wealth-building strategy, businesses can pioneer sustainable tourism, green infrastructure, nature recovery, circular production, and cultural and creative production. Be part of a new economy that’s not only resilient and fair-but exportable. We offer an innovation sandbox for businesses who want to make the future.

  • “A Biosphere as a Systemic Research Platform”
The Isle of Wight offers a 900 km² UNESCO-recognised ‘living lab’ to test climate resilience, ecological economics, and social innovation. With Centres of Excellence in nature-informed design, and open access to data through the Biosphere Commons, we invite researchers and institutions to co-produce bold, interdisciplinary work-linking local experimentation to global learning. Let’s publish, prototype, and provoke change together.

  • “Regeneration by Us, For Us”
This is our Island and your future. The Isle of Wight is a hothouse environment for accelerating socio-ecological change that can inform and assist your own work and activism. Through the Parish Futures initiative, community wealth building, and the redesign of a locally meaningful provisioning economy (in housing, health, learning and food), we are building power from the ground up. Every voice matters. Every community counts. Get involved, shape your place, let’s shape the Biosphere into a beacon of shared success.

  • “A New Island Narrative”
Beyond the headlines of rural struggle, the Isle of Wight is becoming a working model for 21st-century regeneration. From youth climate action and parish democracy to cultural renaissance and ecological restoration, the Island’s story is bold, hopeful, and globally significant. We invite you to amplify it: not just a story of place, but a story of possibility.

  • “Designing with Nature, Building for Life”
Through our award-winning, policy-referenced, and academically published work at Artecology, we bring biodiversity and ecological function into the heart of infrastructure and development. From retrofitting sea defences with Nature-Inclusive Design (NID) to CoCreating biodiverse spaces with local communities, we deliver practical, evidence-led innovation for the built environment. Our approach fuses art, ecology, and engineering to produce beautiful, functional, multispecies solutions-turning grey infrastructure green and transforming hard edges into living systems. Partner with us to design regenerative places that thrive.

  • “From Island to Everywhere”
As a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the Isle of Wight is internationally mandated to prototype scalable solutions. With our Co-Create network, Centres of Excellence, and replicable governance model, we’re exporting techniques and methodologies for regeneration. Whether you are in a Pacific atoll or a European city, the tools we’re building here can travel. Partner with us to test and translate change across the world.
